A study café in Jounieh for university students

By Jinane & Sophanie, founders of Luciole··5 min read

If you study at USEK or NDU and need a calm place to revise, Luciole in Jounieh Souks is a short drive away and works well as a study café. It has Wi-Fi, power outlets, a quiet room separate from the kids' atelier, and food from breakfast at 8 am until 10 pm.

Libraries close. Home is noisy. Your dorm desk has seen enough of you this semester. At some point every student starts looking for a third place: somewhere calm, with a socket within reach and a coffee that does not cost you the walk back.

That is a big part of why people end up at Luciole. The café sits on the first floor of the Chiha Building in Jounieh Souks, a short drive from USEK in Kaslik and NDU in Zouk Mosbeh. And no, you do not need to have kids to sit here. The café is open to everyone.

What makes a café good for studying?

Before you pack your bag, here is the checklist most students use, and how Luciole matches it.

Is it quiet, even with a kids' atelier on the same floor?

This is the first question students ask, and it is a fair one. The atelier, where children do workshops and supervised play, has its own space. The café is a separate coffee shop room. So you get a calm table to read, write or work through problem sets, not the sound of a playground.

When is the best time to come and study?

  • Weekday mornings (from 8 am): the calmest time. Good for deep work, reading and writing.
  • Weekday afternoons: come after classes and stay into the evening. We are open until 10 pm from Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Weekend sessions: on Saturday and Sunday we are open from 8 am to 10 pm, so you can put in a full day during exams.
  • Mondays: we are closed, so plan your Monday elsewhere.

What to eat during a long study session

Studying for four hours on coffee alone rarely ends well. A few ideas from the menu, depending on how long you plan to stay:

A quick start

A cheese, thyme or chocolate croissant ($2.5) or an almond croissant ($3) with your coffee. Simple and enough to get going.

A proper meal break

The open-face tuna ($7) and the beetroot & Bulgarian cheese toast ($8) are easy on the budget. If you want something more filling, try the truffle chicken sandwich ($10), the à la grecque bowl ($10) or the kale & quinoa salad ($16).

Evening fuel

A Nutella mousse or vanilla pudding ($5) is the classic reward after finishing a chapter. Coffee is served all day too.

The menu may change with the season. Takeaway is available if you prefer to grab something and head back to campus.

Can I come with my study group?

Yes. Group projects are easier around one table than on a video call. Send us a message on WhatsApp with the number of people and the time, and we will try to keep a table for your group. If the session turns into a catch-up, our guide on where to meet friends in Jounieh has more ideas for the evening.

A few café study habits that actually help

  1. Charge your laptop before you come, then use the outlet as a backup.
  2. Bring headphones for calls and lectures, so the room stays calm for everyone.
  3. Work in blocks: 50 minutes on, a short break looking out over the souks, then back.
  4. Order something every couple of hours. It keeps your energy up and keeps you honest about breaks.
  5. Pick one goal per session. "Finish chapter 4" beats "study".

Remote workers use the café in the same way. If you are also freelancing alongside your studies, you will feel at home. You can learn more about the place and the people behind it on our about page.
