What should I look for in a safe kids' play space?
Check five things: enough trained adults on the floor, a closed entrance children cannot leave through alone, clear registration and pick-up rules, clean toilets and materials, and a written note of any allergies. A safe space answers your questions without hesitating.
The checklist
- Supervision. How many adults are watching, and how many children each?
- Entrance. Can a child walk out alone? The answer must be no.
- Registration and pick-up. Do they take your number and ask who may collect your child?
- Cleanliness. Look at floors, toilets and art materials.
- Allergies and food. Do they write allergies down and tell you what is served?
- Age-appropriate materials. No small parts for toddlers, safe paints and tools.
- First aid. Ask what happens if a child falls or feels unwell.
Trust your instinct
If the team seems rushed, or nobody asks about your child, keep looking. The right place will want to know your child's name, age and habits.
